The doctoral thesis of Lara Touza Otero, carried out in the I+DFarma group of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Institute of Materials (iMATUS) at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), has received the First ÍCARUS Prize for Doctoral Theses in the field of Health Sciences, a USC award recognizing research excellence and the potential for transferring research results.The thesis, entitled “Harnessing Grape Marc Polyphenols for Veterinary Health: Design and Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Formulations,” was supervised by Professors Patricia Díaz Rodríguez and Mariana Landín Pérez.
The research explores the valorization of byproducts from the wine industry by harnessing the polyphenols present in grape pomace for the design and evaluation of innovative pharmaceutical formulations to improve animal health. The work integrates sustainability, circular economy, and pharmaceutical technology to develop new therapeutic alternatives with potential applications in veterinary medicine. The ÍCARUS program recognizes doctoral theses and undergraduate and master’s theses with high potential for transfer and practical application, highlighting the capacity of university research to generate scientific, technological, and social impact.
