Carmen Álvarez-Lorenzo, Head of the I+DFarma Research Group and Director of the Institute of Materials (iMATUS) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC), has been awarded the 2026 Blas Cabrera National Research Award in the field of Physical Sciences, Materials Science and Earth Sciences, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

The award recognizes her outstanding research career in the field of biomedical materials science, where she has made major contributions to the development of advanced biomaterials for controlled drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering. The National Research Awards are the highest scientific distinction granted by the Government of Spain to researchers with internationally recognized records of excellence and leadership.

This distinction also acknowledges the work carried out over several decades by the I+DFarma Research Group, reflecting the collective efforts of researchers, students, technical staff, and national and international collaborators who have contributed to advancing innovative functional materials for biomedical applications.

For the group, this award is both a recognition of past achievements and a strong motivation to continue pursuing research excellence with the same enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication to innovation and technology transfer that have guided its work from the very beginning.

The award ceremony will take place in October and further reinforces the leadership of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in the fields of biomedical materials and pharmaceutical technology.
